After inheriting her father-in-law’s business, Tabacaria Aviz’s current manager, Maria José Viriato, took advantage of her experience and decided to implement some changes. It started by offering other types of articles and products, besides the usual publications, and extended its opening hours. At this time, in addition to its normal opening hours during the week, it is also open from 10 pm to 4 am on weekends. This differentiating time opened the tobacconist to a new audience. In addition to a place where people will buy their newspapers and magazines and tobacco, they have started to serve another type of audience that uses the tobacco shop almost as a convenience store.

Moreira da Costa bookstore was founded in 1902 and is one of the oldest literary bookstores in the country. It is currently owned by a founder’s grandchild and has a collection of old and rare books. It is a historic Porto shop, having received important literary gatherings in the first half of the 20th century. It has an archive of books since the seventeenth century with great emphasis on French books in the area of theology and architecture, among others, featuring a representative collection of the writer Camilo Castelo Branco. Its semicircular interior architecture gives it a unique look while remaining true to the original design.

Latina is one of the most emblematic bookstores in Porto. It was founded in 1942 by Henrique Perdigão and is known for its façade, highlighting the bust of Luis de Camões. It was the first company in Portugal to create a literary contest, right in the year of its inauguration. The winner of the contest was Prof. José Hermano Saraiva who competed with the work “Vento vindo dos montes” using the pseudonym Simplicimus. Now part of the Leya group, Latina continues to offer its customers a wide range of books.
