In fact, being a café, it keeps its book activity active, publishing literary works and buying and selling books, photographs, maps, postcards and other documents. It is a space characterized by a unique and cozy atmosphere with quality ambient music, ideal for a night of conversation with friends. In the late 60’s, the São Mamede Gallery opened its doors in Lisbon, in a Pombaline building, almost in front of the Attorney General’s Office and the São Mamede Church. He has always dedicated himself exclusively to Portuguese modernism and the contemporary movement, with occasional exhibitions by foreign artists. She has had an intense and quality artistic activity, supported by “classic” artists who have always been linked to the Gallery (such as Areal, Cesariny, Cruzeiro Seixas or Julio) but also, and above all, by new artists. In 2005 it expanded to the city of Porto, today being in the central nerve of the city’s art, near the Soares dos Reis Museum and in the heart of Porto’s art galleries.
In this shop, the main vocation is to disclose the work of small creators, essentially Portuguese. Their mentors, a couple who loves to “build dreams”, have tried to pull into this space those who, like them, share the same vision. The project is inserted in a multifunctional space of interaction between that which the creators like and the taste of other people who, like them, appreciate “quality, design, simplicity, creativity”. Besides its brands, 100% Portugal and Mum Who Loves to Sew, you can find other authors who are environmentally conscious and make handmade pieces. There is a great bet on illustration, but also on ceramics, author costume jewellery, and decoration, among others.
Latina is one of the most emblematic bookstores in Porto. It was founded in 1942 by Henrique Perdigão and is known for its façade, highlighting the bust of Luis de Camões. It was the first company in Portugal to create a literary contest, right in the year of its inauguration. The winner of the contest was Prof. José Hermano Saraiva who competed with the work “Vento vindo dos montes” using the pseudonym Simplicimus. Now part of the Leya group, Latina continues to offer its customers a wide range of books. Throughout its three floors you will find all the latest Portuguese and foreign literature, as well as technical, school, children’s and artistic books and travel guides.
